Maximising opportunities for local suppliers
Economic Impact
£1.4 billion into the UK supply chain
Buchan Offshore Wind is committed to maximising the opportunities for the Scottish and UK offshore wind supply chains from the project’s development, construction, installation and operations.
At the heart of this commitment is our early decision to utilise BW Ideol’s Damping Pool® foundation which will be fabricated in concrete. This strategy will allow for BW Ideol to establish a new manufacturing base at the former oil and gas fabrication yard at the Port of Ardersier. This new facility will utilise skills more closely aligned to Scottish and UK indigenous capabilities, with significant opportunities for energy transition roles and new skills and career pathways for school leavers.
This will see the project support close to 2,900 jobs at the peak of construction according to analysis by Biggar Economics, who also calculate that the project will spend more than £900m with the Scottish supply chain during development, construction and installation.
Longer term, the offshore project will spend more than £50m a year with Scottish suppliers during operations, supporting around 300 long-term jobs over the 35 year operational life of the project.
We are actively engaging with potential suppliers as we seek to build a detailed understanding of the capabilities and expertise which we can source within Scotland and the rest of the UK. We see significant opportunities for UK and Scottish suppliers of raw materials, products and services with everything from aggregate, rebar and sand to high voltage cabling and port services. While the project will contract with a small number of tier one contractors, we are actively engaging with our supply chain to ensure that tier 2, 3 and beyond suppliers understand and are ready for delivery.
