Engineering Manager
The Company
Buchan Offshore Wind is the developer of a major floating offshore wind farm 75 km to the northeast of Fraserburgh on the Aberdeenshire coast. With an anticipated capacity of close to 1GW and a connection date of 2033, the project would feature up to 70 turbines and has the potential to generate the equivalent of the annual power needs of some 1.4 million British homes.
A dynamic, committed and focused project team has seen the project deliver on its key milestones to date, with both the offshore and onshore consent applications submitted to the Scottish Government and Aberdeenshire Council respectively, in Autumn 2025. The focus is now making preparations for moving into the post-consent phase, enhancing the supply chain programme and delivering on the project’s engineering roadmap.
The project’s unique selling point is the selection of BW Ideol’s patented Damping Pool® floating substructure which has the potential to both accelerate delivery and generate significant levels of employment in Scotland, with BW Ideol actively working to establish a manufacturing centre at the former oil and gas fabrication yard at Port of Ardersier.
The joint venture has three equal partners, with highly relevant and complementary capability and expertise: BayWa r.e., a global renewable energy business with UK offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh; BW Ideol, a proven floating technology leader and international floating wind project co-developer; and Elicio, an experienced Belgian offshore wind developer, owner and operator.
This major multi-billion-pound infrastructure project will include up to 70 WTGs and associated floating foundations, up to 3 offshore substation platforms, 1 intermediate reactive compensation platform, a cable route of circa 90km offshore, 30 km of onshore cable and a HVAC substation connecting to SSE’s onshore transmission system. More information on the project, including the related planning applications can be found at www.buchanoffshorewind.com
The Role
The Engineering Manager will play a central role in driving the technical design and coordination of all engineering packages for the Buchan Offshore Wind project. Reporting to the Technical & Engineering Director, the postholder will lead the day-to-day management of the project’s engineering activities, ensuring design work is integrated, timely and aligned with the project’s development strategy.
The role will span the full lifecycle of the project: from early design development, through FEED, into procurement and construction preparation, and eventually supporting the project through installation and commissioning. The Engineering Manager will ensure that design decisions made today remain robust, coordinated, and deliverable as the project enters execution.
They will manage the internal engineering team and oversee a suite of external consultants delivering multi-disciplinary scopes. This is a key leadership position in one of Europe’s most advanced floating offshore wind developments, suited to someone who thrives in coordinating complex engineering programmes and working across multiple technical and commercial interfaces.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead and Coordinate All Engineering Packages
• Provide day-to-day leadership across all engineering disciplines, floating foundations, electrical systems, cables, substations, onshore works, WTG interface and O&M inputs.
• Ensure all design packages progress consistently and align with the overall project strategy and schedule.
• Own the day-to-day delivery of the project’s design management framework, ensuring design work is integrated, consistent, well-governed and progresses in a controlled manner.
• Ensure all engineering disciplines follow a structured, transparent approach to interfaces, decisions, assumptions and design progression
2. Manage the Internal Engineering Team
• Line manage a growing engineering team
• Foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
• Coordinate resource planning, discipline leadership and technical delivery.
• Support the development and manage performance of the growing team
3. Oversee External Engineering & FEED Contractors
• Manage a framework of engineering consultancies delivering pre-FEED and FEED scopes.
• Ensure clarity of scope, strong technical standards, and timely high-quality outputs.
• Lead technical input during specification development, tendering and contract management
• Manage the delivery of the external work to meet commercial and cost requirements
4. Drive Integration of All Engineering Activities
• Coordinate the full suite of design activities to ensure a coherent, controlled and traceable design progression.
• Maintain alignment between structural, electrical, installation, marine, ports and onshore package interfaces.
• Keep the design baseline, design changes and interface decisions consistent and well-managed.
5. Support Programme Delivery
• Work closely with project management and planning teams to ensure engineering outputs meet key milestones.
• Track progress, highlight risks early, and drive mitigation actions.
• Ensure technical definition is available in line with procurement and long-lead timelines.
6. Technical Assurance & Quality Management
• Ensure designs meet relevant standards, industry practice and project quality requirements
• Review critical deliverables and guide technical direction within the team.
• Support preparations for design reviews and formal approvals.
7. Support Transition into Execution
• Maintain engineering continuity as the project moves from design into manufacture, installation and commissioning.
• Ensure package designs are mature, coordinated and ready for execution
• Provide technical support to construction planning, installation readiness, and commissioning strategy development.
8. Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Work closely with commercial, consenting, project management and supply-chain teams to ensure engineering requirements are aligned across the project
• Support the Technical & Engineering Director in interactions with OEMs, supply-chain partners, advisors and shareholders.
• Ensure engineering requirements are clearly represented and balanced within wider project objectives, working closely with commercial, consenting, procurement and project management teams.
9. Addressing CDM / design safety
• Lead the implementation of design safety principles and CDM responsibilities, ensuring hazards are identified, reduced or designed out, and that designers meet their legal duties.
